*Please send (email) pages to be critiqued to the other members of the novelist group at least one week in advance.

Rules of Engagement...
We will meet every other Saturday in the Hughes Main Library Study Rooms (upstairs) from 2:00 -  4:00pm.

We will limit this group's membership to eight.  When we consistently have eight in attendance, we will divide into two groups of four.

As critiquers, we strive to be kind but honest, recognizing that authors need encouragement as well as perspective.  As authors, we choose not to be defensive, recognizing that we can learn something from every new reader, even if we do not agree with the advice.

We will do two types of critiques in this group: detailed and short
  • The detailed critique will be 20 to 30 pages of the writer's work.  The group will discuss the work for 30 minutes, during which the author may not speak.  The author may join in the discussion for the last fifteen minutes of the critique to answer questions, elaborate, ask questions, etc.  There will be one detailed critique per meeting.

  • The short critique will be 5 to 10 pages of the writer's work.  The group and the author will discuss each short critique for 10 minutes.  There will be no more than five short critiques per meeting.

  • The pages to be critiqued should be sent to all group members at least one week prior to the critique meeting to give the group time to read and critique prior to the meeting.

  • In the event of schedule conflicts on the day that you are scheduled an extended critique, you are responsible for swapping dates with other members of the group ahead of time.  Notify Sarah of the switch to have the webpage updated.
Any group member who finds something of interest in published books - a strong book opening, compelling descriptions, etc - can bring the example in and read it to the group.
The idea here is to share these "finds" with the group in order to make all of our writing stronger.  We will limit these offered examples to one per meeting in interest of time.

If you are going to miss a meeting, please notify the group by email or phone.  Send an email to Sarah to be listed "MIA" for that meeting.
