The Petigru Review—2011 Submission Guidelines

The South Carolina Writers Workshop is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for inclusion in the fifth issue of its literary journal. The Petigru Review-2011 will feature the best writing of SCWW members in three categories: fiction (including flash fiction), nonfiction and poetry. Submissions may be sent no earlier than April 1, 2011, and no later than April 30, 2011.

Judges will be announced soon.

The competition is open to SCWW members who have paid their dues by April 30, 2011. There is no other entry fee. Please feel free to contact Steve Gordy, membership coordinator, at scwwmembership@gmail.com, if you have any questions about your membership status. New members are always welcome.

Each member may submit up to 3000 words of fiction, (a single story cannot be longer than 2500 words), and/or up to 2000 words of nonfiction, and/or 80 lines of poetry. Each member is free to divide up the total word- or line-count in each category among multiple submissions, so long as these length limits are observed when all such submissions are added together. Submissions that exceed the length limit in any category or in total will be disqualified.

For example, a hypothetical member might submit two short stories of 1,500 words each, four nonfiction pieces of 500 words each, and eight 10-line poems. But if that same hypothetical member were to exceed the poetry line-count, all of his or her submissions would be disqualified.

With the exception of work previously published in The Quill, only unpublished work is eligible. Simultaneous submissions are permitted as long as the author immediately notifies the editor of The Petigru Review when a piece has been accepted elsewhere.

Authors whose work is selected for publication in The Petigru Review-2011 will receive two contributor’s copies. SCWW retains first-time publication rights until the literary journal is published, at which time publication rights revert to the author. SCWW solicits authors' non-exclusive first Internet archival rights for online archiving.

SCWW reserves the right to edit submissions at the editor's sole discretion.

Tips: Submit your best efforts. Good writing will get the attention of the judges. Judges will consider each submission on its merit. They look for the manuscripts that rise above the mundane, that present the author's truth in an evocative manner. Grab the reader with your first sentence. Take chances, think beyond the literal and build a world that invites the reader into the story or poem.

Proofreading is important.

Manuscript Formatting:

  1. All submissions must be typed on one side of 8.5-inch x 11-inch white paper. Entries should have one-inch margins all around. All text must be black, 12 point point Times New Roman font. Prose entries must be double-spaced. Poetry should be formatted as the poet wishes it to appear in print.

  2. Pages of each submission should be stapled—yes, stapled—with one staple in the upper left hand corner.

  3. The title and page number must appear on every page of a submission. The author’s name must not appear anywhere on the manuscript(s), including in the body of the work.

  4. Four paper copies of each manuscript must be submitted. Each author's submission package must include one cover sheet that may be downloaded here TPR Cover Sheet.

  5. Do not include a SASE because manuscripts will not be returned.

  6. Please mail four paper copies of each manuscript with cover sheet in a large-sized envelope, to: Trilby Plants, The Petigru Review, 4305 Lotus Ct Unit D, Murrells Inlet SC 29576.

  7. Send a copy of each manuscript as a Microsoft Word attachment (with a “.doc” suffix, not “.docx”) in a separate e-mail to scwwanthology@gmail.com. In the body of the e-mail include an author biography of up to 100 words. Please also attach a high resolution color or black and white photo of yourself, preferably a head shot.

  8. All envelopes must be postmarked and all emails with attachments must be sent no later than April 30, 2011.

  9. Submissions that do not adhere to the guidelines will be disqualified and the entrant notified.

Photographers:

SCWW also seeks digital photographs for inclusion in The Petigru Review. Photos may be taken in South Carolina or Savannah, Georgia—the home of our first out-of-state chapter.

Please submit color photos only. They must be high resolution JPG files, portrait or landscape orientation and have a resolution of 300 dots per inch or more. Members may also submit digital photos of their original art work: drawings, paintings, sculpture, or other media. Again, high resolution color JPG. No photos of people whose faces are identifiable will be accepted. Photos may be cropped for content. When cropping use standard sizes: 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc.

Photo submissions will be considered outside of the writing competition and will be used on a discretionary basis. No compensation will be paid for photos, except the photographer whose photo is chosen for the cover art will receive two contributor’s copies of the issue in which his/her work appears. Photos used will be given credit. Upon publication all other rights will revert to the photographer.

Please submit no more than 10 photos as JPG attachments (one photo per email, please) to scwwanthology@gmail.com.

Good luck to all.
